Just a few years ago, Juan Rico, who up to then was also known as Reeko, presented his new project to the world with these words.
Architectural got off the ground without the need to reveal who was behind the alias. But the same man who took DJ booths and festivals by storm under the Reeko moniker, needed a new alter ego to channel his effervescent spells of creativity. With Architectural, the Asturian living in Catalonia walks a very different artistic path from the one he was on before.
Over the last few years, Architectural has become a more defined and mature project. After the first releases in 2010 and 2011 (Architectural 001 to 003), and with those that followed in 2013 and 2014 (004 and 005), all of which were published by his own label Architectural Records, he laid the foundations and the structure has become strong and solid.
In 2012 Architectural released Peacetime with Semantica Records. Being chosen by a label that is so careful in selecting the works they publish is proof that Architectural was on the right track: methodical, patient and brilliant both at the drawing table and with the first samples of his construction work.
Juan’s next step in 2013 certified Architectural’s maturity: he published The Blue Album (Reeko & Architectural) with PoleGroup.
A fusion of his two projects that results in a spatial and futuristic sound, with jazz hues and the feel of a movie soundtrack.
So now Juan has revealed that he is the force behind both Reeko and Architectural. Does this mean he’s not entirely sure about what he wants to create? Does he suffer from bipolarity? Maybe he’s the kind of artist that during the Renaissance would have been called a total artist, a true creator in the widest sense of the word. The fact that in 2014 Juan performed twice during the L.E.V. festival in Gijón to present this album bears witness to the quality and coherence of all his releases.
2014 also brought The Secret Chapter.
This release had a cinematic flavour and is inspired on what may happen at night in a remote forest. The mood is dark and boasts an outstanding amalgamation of jazz and techno.
2015 will culminate with the launch of Amour with Dutch label Wolfskuil, courtesy of Darko Esser, guarantee of extreme quality.
As a record, Amour is much more geared towards the dance floor than the preceding The Secret Chapter. It will be more luminous, melodic and alive, without ever departing from the intimate moods and obsession for precision that have become a hallmark of Architectural’s work.
